All managers at the Gillings School are asked to support employees engaging in eight hours of IE professional development during the 2021-2022 academic year. In addition to the examples below, we will identify a broad range of on- and off-campus trainings that will meet the expectations of this development.

Race and Cultural Competence

Inclusive Classrooms Summer Symposium
The Inclusive Classrooms Summer Symposium is an annual skills building event for members of the Gillings community to create more inclusive classroom experiences. With varying topics every year, the symposium provides instructors, including faculty, instructional staff, and teaching assistants, with history, theory, and practical skills to critically analyze their course content, delivery methods, and assessment materials to foster more anti-oppressive teaching environments.
Duration: 12 hours

Racial Equity Institute (REI) Groundwater Seminar- Intro to Race Equity
A three (3) hour introduction to racial equity presented by REI. REI staff use stories and data to present the perspective that racisms is “fundamentally structural in nature” and by “examining characteristics of modern-day racial inequity, the presentation introduces participants to an analysis that most find helpful and relevant.”
Duration: 3 hours

North Carolina Racial Equity Network by UNC School of Government
NC REN members attend six one-day training programs at the School of Government focused on how issues of race may affect various stages of a criminal proceeding and how attorneys may address these issues
Duration: 36 hours

Course: Leading for Racial Equity: Examining Structural Issues of Race and Class SPHG 720 (section 001) 2.0 credits
Participants complete an intensive 2-day training with REI trainers and course instructors on the explicit and subtle ways that racialized patterns in American culture, policies, and practices permeate political, economic, and social structures. At three and five weeks following this initial training, students will meet to discuss, evaluate, and analyze completed readings and the final group assignment.
Duration: 16 hours (training portion of course)

Special Populations

Green Zone Training
Green Zone training is for faculty and staff that wish to learn more about the military affiliated student experience. Its goals are to train members of the Carolina community to know more about the issues and concerns faced by military affiliated students and to identify individuals who are available to assist this population.
Duration: 3 hours

UndocuCarolina Ally Training
The three-hour trainings use interactive workshop techniques to familiarize participants with federal, state and University laws and policies that affect undocumented students and their families; teach attendees to identify and make a commitment to immigrant-sensitive language; and make allies aware of resources available on campus and in the community for undocumented students.
Duration: 3 hours

American Disability Act (ADA) Training
The ADA National network offers live training for employees, supervisors, and HR professionals and more that increases awareness of policies and best practices for supporting disabled or differently-abled individuals and familiarizes participants with their responsibilities and available resources. Provides an overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and ADA Amendments Act of 2008.

Sexual Orientation/Gender Expression

Standard Safe Zone Training
The Standard Safe Zone is a four-hour training is designed to introduce concepts, terminology and resources related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. There is a short intermission about halfway through.
Duration: 4 hours

Safe Zone Transgender and Nonbinary Training
Safe Zone Transgender and Nonbinary (formerly Gender Identity and Gender Expression) is a two-hour training designed to make the University community a safer and more supportive place for all Carolina students, faculty, and staff members by creating a network of allies who have basic knowledge about transgender and intersex communities. Standard Safe Zone training is a prerequisite for this training.
Duration: 2 hours

Mental Health

Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training that will give staff and faculty the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as CPR training helps a layperson without medical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.
Duration: 8 hours

Sexual Assault/Intimate Partner Violence

HAVEN
The HAVEN training provides students, faculty, and staff with tools to support someone who has experienced sexual or interpersonal violence or stalking. The three-hour live training emphasizes the importance of listening, responding compassionately, and connecting those affected by violence to resources on campus and in the community.
Duration: 3 hours

One Act and One Act for Greeks
One Act and One Act for Greeks are skills trainings for Carolina students who are interested in preventing interpersonal violence. The trainings are led by peer educators and a full-time staff member. One Act is a student-led collaboration with Student Wellness that was launched in Fall 2010. This training provides the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognize the early warning signs of violence and harassment and take preventive action in your everyday life to help your friends. One Act for Greeks is tailored for members of fraternities and sororities. After students attend One Act, they receive placards, stickers, and/or buttons that they may display on their residence hall room door, laptop or backpack. This visibility of trained community members helps send a message to the campus that our community cares!
Duration: 4 hours

Employment Equity

Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Fundamentals Training
This training is offered by the Office of State Human Resources and is required by law for managerial and supervisory employees. Participants learn about federal and state equal employment opportunity and affirmative action laws in the context of daily work situations.
Duration: 13 hours

Blueprint for Engaged Supervision Training (BEST)
Required live training for employee supervisors that covers a number of topics pertaining to their role as a supervisor at the University. EOC presents a section of the training that provides information about maintaining a welcoming and equitable work environment, as well as equal opportunity laws. Check with your HR representative for eligibility information.
