Graduation Steps

Graduation is a two-step process. Every student must 1) Apply to graduate in ConnnectCarolina and 2) Register for the Gillings ceremony.

To get started, visit the University Registrar. Use the following website to confirm that all graduation-related items have been completed by the deadlines. To register for the ceremony, visit the commencement registration page to confirm your and your guests attendance.

Order Graduation Regalia

Graduation regalia can be purchased online at the UNC Student Stores website. These orders are fulfilled by the vendor and have 2-week shipping. Undergraduate regalia can also be bought in-person at the UNC Student Stores.

FAQs

As students near the completion of their individual degree programs, questions may arise concerning policies and procedures associated with commencement. Our FAQs document (PDF) helps to answer some of those.

As you plan for the celebration, it also will be helpful to know the following:

  • The event will be recorded, so you can share it after the fact with family and friends who cannot attend in person.
  • Due to a paper shortage, we do not have enough printed programs for everyone. At the event, please share one printed program per group. Everyone can view the online (PDF) version at go.unc.edu/program22.
  • The Gillings School will follow University protocols on masking: Masks are encouraged, but not required. Anyone who wants a commemorative Gillings-branded mask can pick one up at the sign-in table in the Carmichael Arena lobby.
  • The Commencement reception will take place at Hooker Fields, which is directly adjacent to Carmichael Arena, immediately following the main event. There will be signs on the field directing graduates to meeting spots for their degree/concentration.
  • All guests who were included in their graduate’s RSVP will receive a boxed lunch catered by The Picnic Basket.
  • Please note that North Carolina weather in May is unpredictable. We will provide tents for shade, but we strongly advise that all attendees wear lights layers to beat the (possible) heat and wear shoes that are comfortable for walking on grass.
  • If you want to visit the Gillings School buildings following the reception, they will be open — but no official event is taking place on-site. The School will provide two 40-passenger buses that will run between Carmichael Arena, the Gillings School and the (TBD) visitor parking location until 6 p.m.

Please contact sph-osa@unc.edu with any questions about Commencement. We are looking forward to celebrating you in person later this spring!
