The UNC Gillings School’s online Master of Public Health (MPH) program, the Online MPH, is designed for professionals and recent graduates who are passionate about solving urgent public health and global health challenges. The Online MPH currently offers two concentrations: Leadership in Practice, Nutrition.

Offered on a full-time or part-time basis, the UNC Gillings School’s online MPH program matches the quality and rigor of its on-campus equivalent, adhering to the same admissions, curriculum, competencies, clinical and public health standards. The program features live, webcam-based online classes with other public health professionals and dynamic, multimedia coursework that students can access 24/7.

Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA)

Health Policy and Management

Students gain a comprehensive understanding of public health philosophy, methods, and values and are provided with an orientation to management and policy-related careers in health services management. The MHA program is designed to help students improve decision-making capabilities and leadership skills, especially for the delivery of healthcare services. Students must come to campus once in the fall (6 days), spring (4 days) and summer (4 days).

Health Policy and Management

Designed for working healthcare professionals in the U.S. or abroad with the potential and ambition to become senior leaders and who are committed to improving the public’s health. Students must come to campus once in the fall, spring and summer (for 3-4 days each visit).


Certificate Programs

Certificate in Field Epidemiology (FEPI)
12 Credit Hours
Epidemiology, Public Health Leadership Program

This is a 12-credit hour program of graduate study that addresses: core functions of outbreak investigation; surveillance systems and methods; infectious disease epidemiology; and field epidemiology methods. All courses are taught completely online. No travel to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus is required. Online certificates are available to any interested student NOT currently enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill. Certificate in Community Preparedness and Disaster Management (PHDM)
9 Credit Hours
Health Policy and Management

Provides community leaders in public health, health services, emergency management, local and state government, the military and volunteers with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of management systems used to mitigate and prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural and man-made disasters, including terrorism. Three courses are offered to each cohort, covering the administrative structures of disaster management at the local, state and federal levels; the science of disasters; methods to plan for and to analyze disasters; and planning and implementation of disaster management programs. This online certificate is available to anyone. Students must come to campus twice (for 2 days each visit) during the program.

Certificate in Core Public Health Concepts (PHCP)

Public Health Leadership Program

This is an interdepartmental 15-credit hour program of graduate study covering the required core content taught within UNC’s MPH programs: epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and management, environmental health, and health behavior. All courses are taught completely online. No travel to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus is required. Online certificates are available to any interested student NOT currently enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill. This is an interdisciplinary 9-credit hour program of graduate study that examines the complexities inherent in improving health on a global scale. Prepares students to work in changing environments and with diverse populations and to respond competently to health challenges presented by permeable geographic and cultural boundaries. All courses are taught completely online and no travel to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus is required. An 11-credit hour program of graduate study covering the core content taught in PHLP’s Leadership MPH concentration. Beneficial to public health professionals aiming to further develop their leadership skills and potential. The curriculum is designed to provide leadership development directed at the individual, team, organizational and community levels within the context of public health and healthcare. Students will master competencies that will enable them to have a greater influence and effectiveness within their organizations. Students will be able successfully complete this program while only traveling to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus once. Introduces health department employees to their roles and responsibilities in providing public health services in their communities. Also covered are the sources of law that pertain to public health, the organization and scope of the public health infrastructure, and the challenges facing public health in NC and beyond. Public Health Ethics (CE-PHE)

North Carolina Institute for Public Health

Promotes the ethical practice of public health. Focuses on the ethical principles of public health and by providing resources for creating an ethical climate in public health agencies and schools of public health. Students complete this program online. No visits to campus are required.
