Welcome to the Department of Biostatistics Summer 2024 Boot Camp!
This program is meant to serve as an introduction or refresher of basic techniques in analysis and linear algebra. They are designed to help you quickly get settled into graduate level courses BIOS 760 and BIOS 762. Both master’s and doctoral students who will be taking these classes in the fall are required to attend. Students not registered for BIOS 760 and BIOS 762 are allowed to attend the boot camp sessions but will not receive credit – they will need to attend the weeks before their respective fall semester enrolled in each course. Additionally, a SAS section of bootcamp will cover basic SAS concepts for doctoral students who plan to take BIOS 611 instead of BIOS 511. MPH data science students without prior SAS experience are also required to attend the SAS section.
Classes will run Monday-Friday from August 5th – August 16th, 2024. The mode of instruction will primarily be in-person, with virtual options for students who have not yet relocated to the Chapel Hill area.
If you have any questions Elena Kharitonova at ekhar@email.unc.edu or our Academic Coordinator Melissa Hobgood at mhobgood@bios.unc.edu.
Linear Algebra
The Linear Algebra section is required for all current and incoming students who will take BIOS 762 (Theory and Applications of Linear and Generalized Linear Models) in the fall semester of 2024. If you are not taking BIOS 762 until 2025 we recommend taking the bootcamp in the summer of 2025 instead of this upcoming summer (unless you prefer to take it twice or will not be able to attend next year). Any students who are interested in getting extra review and instruction for Linear Algebra are welcome to attend even if they will not take BIOS 762 in the fall semester.
Real Analysis
The Real Analysis section is required for all current and incoming students who will take BIOS 760 (Advanced Probability and Statistical Inference 1) in the fall semester of 2024. If you are not taking BIOS 760 until 2025, we recommend taking the bootcamp in the summer of 2025 instead of this upcoming summer (unless you prefer to take it twice or will not be able to attend next year). Any students who are interested in getting extra review and instruction for Real Analysis are welcome to attend even if they will not take BIOS 760 in the fall semester.
SAS
The SAS section is required for all incoming doctoral students who will take BIOS 611 (Introduction to Data Science) instead of BIOS 511 (Introduction to Statistical Computing and Data Management) as well as for all incoming MPH Data Science students without previous SAS experience. Students can request exemption from the SAS section if they have had prior experience with SAS. The SAS bootcamp will go over the basics of how to use SAS which will not be covered in BIOS 611, but will be helpful and/or expected in some other biostatistics courses.
