The Inclusive Excellence Summer Symposium is an annual skills-building event for members of the Gillings community to foster more inclusive learning and working environments. With varying topics every year, the symposium provides attendees with history, theory and practical skills to critically analyze their course content, workplace practices and professional relationships to co-create inclusive learning and working environments.

More About Our Speakers

Dr. Raé N. Lundy

Dr. Raé N. Lundy, a licensed clinical psychologist, Director of Counseling Services at Georgia State University, mental health activist, TEDx Speaker, and founder of The Self-Care Doc, LLC, has been dedicated to fostering mental health equity and increasing access to services for Black college students for over fifteen years. Through culturally competent and innovative interventions, she works to decrease stress, support trauma recovery, and guard against burnout and fatigue. Dr. Lundy serves on several national boards, including the United Negro College Fund’s newly appointed Mental Health Advisory Council, StandUp SpeakOut of North Carolina, a national nonprofit supporting trauma survivors, and W.E.L.L. (Women’s Empowerment Leadership League), which focuses on creating workforce equity for minority women.


Dr. Ramine Alexander

Dr. Alexander received her Master of Public Health with a concentration in Health Education and Ph.D. in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise with a concentration in Behavioral and Community Science from Virginia Tech. As an intervention scientist, her research interest includes utilizing Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) to improve lifestyle risk factors (i.e., diet and physical activity) that have a direct relevance to obesity and chronic disease. Through CBPR approaches a primary goal of her work is to involve the voice of the community in the research process to promote intervention sustainability. Dr. Alexander has a passion for building health equity, conducting research on the social determinants of health, and using innovative approaches to communicate science. Currently, she is a Research Project Manager at UNC Chapel Hill Nutrition Research Institute in the Living F.R.E.E. (Research Focused on Reducing Excessive Eating) Lab. The Living F.R.E.E. Lab is a research group focused on developing, implementing, and evaluating equitable interventions for those who live at the intersection of having disordered eating and chronic disease. During her free time, she enjoys traveling, catching up on her favorite shows, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with family and friends.


Gavin Bell

Gavin Bell is a member of the Lumbee tribe of North Carolina and currently serves as an Assistant Director in NC State’s Multicultural Student Affairs Center. Gavin is from Durham, North Carolina, and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from NC State in 2021. He currently is a doctoral student in NC State’s College of Education, with a specific concentration in HEOEJ (Higher Education Opportunity Equity & Justice). Much of Gavin’s research and work as a student affairs practitioner revolves around relational mentorship, well-being, and Indigenous ways of knowing. He strives to carry these principles into all areas of his life, and into the lives of those he supports.
