UNC resources for sharing feedback and getting help with concerns

Counseling

UNC CAPS

(3rd floor, Campus Health) is available for same-day, walk-in emergency services, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For crisis or 24/7 support, call UNC CAPS at 919-966-3658 or call/text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

If you have urgent concerns or are in crisis: please use CAPS walk-in and after-hours services.

  • Walk-in care is available Mon-Fri 9 a.m. – noon and 1-4 p.m., both in person and by phone, with no appointment necessary. You can either come to CAPS in person (third floor of Campus Health Building) or call (919) 966-3658 to request a virtual walk-in. You will be asked to fill out some paperwork, then meet with one of the walk-in therapists right away. Students are typically seen within 10-15 minutes of completing paperwork.
  • After-hours care is available whenever CAPS is closed (including nights, weekends and holidays, 24/7 hours a day and 365 days a year). Just call the CAPS 24/7 line at (919) 966-3658.

If you are seeking brief individual therapy, please email Melissa Saunders, assistant director for clinical services at CAPS, at msaunder@email.unc.edu to get connected with an appropriate provider. For your convenience, we offer virtual therapy sessions at a variety of times (including evenings and weekends) and in a wide variety of languages.

If you are seeking referrals for open-ended or specialized individual therapy in the community: please use CAPS walk-in services (as described above) or email CAPSreferrals@unc.edu. Another option is to use www.psychologytoday.com’s “Therapist Finder” search tool at https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists.

  • If you run into any problems getting connected OR would like to apply for financial assistance with the out-of-pocket costs of therapy in the community, please call CAPS at 919-966-3658 to request a virtual Referral Coordination appointment. If you have never done a CAPS walk-in visit OR it has been more than one month since your last walk-in OR your concerns have become more urgent, please return to CAPS walk-in for further assessment/support before requesting a Referral Coordination appointment.
  • If you have specific referral questions, you may email capsreferrals@unc.edu.

For all other mental health concerns (including group therapy and medication appointments), please use CAPS walk-in services (see above)

Please note: CAPS walk-in, after-hours, brief individual therapy, group therapy and referral coordination services are available to all residential students at Gillings free of charge. CAPS does bill your insurance for medication appointments. Our providers are in-network for all major insurance plans in the area. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the initial medication evaluation, but you are responsible for any costs that insurance does not cover thereafter.

UNC Peer Counseling Support (Peer2Peer)

Peer2Peer is an organization that promotes free one on one peer support for UNC students. Our Peer Responders are here to listen and support individuals, especially during these uncertain times. We hope with the diverse range of experience, backgrounds, and topics of interest, our Responders are able to provide a peer perspective. Peer support is a linkage between people that can provide support, encouragement, and feelings of normalcy. Peers can share knowledge and support that can only be gained through lived experience.
