Gillings teaching faculty:

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to leverage the capabilities of our new Learning Management System, Canvas, as you continually improve course quality and demonstrate inclusive pedagogy. Get ready for The Canvas Challenge!

The What

The Canvas Challenge is a multi-module, guided-paced course available fully online on Canvas providing flexibility and choice in scheduling. It is comprehensive in scope and designed sequentially to address the pedagogical and technological needs of Gillings instructors. The Challenge begins with an overview and planning, followed by modules on

  • Navigating Canvas;
  • Designing for all learners;
  • Uploading and creating content;
  • Assessing student learning;
  • Engaging students; and
  • Reviewing your courses.

Gillings’ EdTech will facilitate the Canvas Challenge by cohort each semester. All activities will be completed asynchronously with the aim of completing one module each week.

The Who

Gillings’ instructional faculty who are ready to accept the challenge and start building a course in Canvas are invited to participate. MPH@UNC instructors/leads must complete the “Teaching Online with 2U Training Course” before taking on the Canvas Challenge. Contact Amy Neaves (aneaves@unc.edu) for more information.

The Why

The Canvas Challenge affords instructors a collaborative space to refine their pedagogical practices with discussion among faculty, facilitation of an instructional designer, and support in course development in Canvas.

The How

The learning environment will be in Canvas. Instructors will be enrolled to the course as students and will participate as learners, showing them the student view of the LMS components. Instructors will also be completing activities in teacher view, practicing what they learn about the LMS features using a course demo site (to import into a live course once available). The course will be available to instructors anywhere at any time with online access. The learning experiences are scaffolded such that they achieve success as their skills and knowledge are increased.

Canvas Challenge Champions, those who complete the Challenge, will be micro-credentialed with a digital badge. This badge can be displayed on their Canvas profile page as well as on social media.
