Gillings School students claim 7 of Graduate School’s 22 Impact and Horizon awards

Adimora, Margolis awarded distinguished professorships

March 22, 2018 Drs. Adaora Adimora and David Margolis, both professors of epidemiology at the Gillings School, have been named Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professors. The five-year professorship is one of the most prestigious awards offered by the UNC School of Medicine.

Alumnus honored with Triangle Business Journal’s Health Care Hero Award

March 15, 2018 Dr. Diego Garza, alumnus and adjunct faculty member at the Gillings School, was honored March 9 with Triangle Business Journal’s Health Care Hero Award. Garza is director of telehealth at Carolina Partners in Mental HealthCare PLLC, in Durham, N.C.

Four UNC Gillings School researchers are among the world's highly cited

March 2, 2018 Four Gillings School faculty members have been named to Clarivate Analytics’ 2017 Highly Cited Researchers list. They are Dr. Ralph Baric (epidemiology), Dr. Noel Brewer (health behavior), Dr. Hans Paerl (environmental sciences and engineering) and Dr. Barry Popkin (nutrition).

Health policy and management senior named Luce Scholar

March 2, 2018 Leah Everist, an undergraduate health policy and management student at the Gillings School, has been selected as a 2018 Luce Scholar by the Henry Luce Foundation. Everist will take part in a year-long internship in community preparedness and disaster response in Asia.

Rimer announces Stürmer as new epidemiology chair

December 14, 2017 Dr. Til Stürmer will become chair of the Gillings School's Department of Epidemiology on March 1, 2018, pending necessary approvals, including from the UNC board of trustees. Dean Barbara K. Rimer expressed confidence in Stürmer's deep commitment to assuring that the department remains one of the top programs in the world, and thanked outgoing chair, Dr. Andy Olshan, for 11 years of excellent service.

Gray elected to National Academy of Engineering

February 22, 2018 Dr. William Gray, research professor of environmental sciences and engineering, is one of 99 new members of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering. Election to the Academy is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.

Malone named 2018 Future Faculty Fellow

February 8, 2018 Tyler Malone, a first-year doctoral student of health policy and management at the Gillings School, has been named a 2018 Future Faculty Fellow by the UNC Center for Faculty Excellence.

Popkin to present AHA’s Kritchevsky Lecture

January 31, 2018 Dr. Barry M. Popkin has been invited by the American Heart Association Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Council to present the David Kritchevsky Memorial Lecture in New Orleans on March 22.

Article by three Gillings researchers is Journal of Human Lactation’s top-read post for 2017

January 26, 2018 Three researchers linked with the Gillings School’s Department of Maternal and Child Health co-authored the Journal of Human Lactation’s most-read article of 2017. Their systematic review examined Step 3 of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, an outline for maternity practices that serves as the foundation for the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.
