Shaikh to receive Mary Swartz Rose Young Investigator Award

January 24, 2018 Dr. Raza Shaikh, associate professor of nutrition, has been selected to receive the 2018 Mary Swartz Rose Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Nutrition. The award recognizes outstanding research into the safety and efficacy of bioactive compounds for human health.

Stillo honored for research with Journal of Public Health Management and Practice award

January 18, 2018 Frank Stillo, doctoral student in environmental sciences and engineering, was selected by the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice as a student who 'rocked public health' in 2017.

Cozzo wins 2017 Marci Kramish Campbell Dissertation Award

January 17, 2018 Alyssa Cozzo, doctoral student in nutrition, has been named recipient of the 2017 Marci Kramish Campbell Dissertation Award. Dr. Campbell, pictured at left, was a leader in UNC cancer research who died of cancer in 2011.

Fry named Angle Distinguished Professor

January 15, 2018 Dr. Rebecca Fry, environmental sciences and engineering professor and director of the UNC Superfund Research Program, has been named Carol Remmer Angle Distinguished Professor of Children’s Environmental Health.

LaVange named associate chair of biostatistics and director of UNC Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center

January 14, 2018 Dr. Lisa LaVange, current president of the American Statistical Association and formerly of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, has been named professor and associate chair of the Gillings School’s Department of Biostatistics and director of the department’s Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC).

Bulik awarded Distinguished Investigator Grant by Brain and Behavior Research Foundation

January 8, 2018 Dr. Cynthia Bulik is one of 17 scientists awarded a Distinguished Investigator Grant from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. Bulik, professor of nutrition, is founding director of the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. Her proposal is a large-scale investigation designed to identify genes that contribute to bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.

New assistant dean for inclusive excellence selected

December 18, 2017 Dr. Kauline Cipriani will join the Gillings School in February 2018 as the School's assistant dean for inclusive excellence. Cipriani most recently has been assistant dean for diversity and inclusion at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Gopal delivers winter commencement address

December 18, 2017 Dr. Satish Gopal, alumnus and adjunct faculty member in epidemiology, delivered the 2017 winter commencement address on Dec. 17. MacDonald Gibson named to NC Science Advisory Board to study emerging chemicals

December 6, 2017 Dr. Jackie MacDonald Gibson has been named to the North Carolina Science Advisory Board to study emerging chemicals, such as GenX, and advise state leaders about ways to protect the environment and the health of North Carolinians. MacDonald Gibson joins fellow environmental sciences and engineering faculty member Dr. Jamie Bartram, who serves as chair of the state board.
