Bio: Hannabeth Franchino-Olsen holds a BS in biology, an MS in physiology and developmental biology, and recently completed her MPH in maternal and child health at UNC. She spent six years conducting lab research in the fields of biophysics and cardiology, including two years at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Before coming to UNC, she worked as a science teacher in Boston-area urban schools for two years. She has collaborated on research projects in the Department of Maternal and Child Health on a variety of subjects, including concussion research among adolescent football players, gender-based violence, and refugee health. As part of her MPH degree, she traveled to Mochudi, Botswana, where she researched, designed, and implemented a now-nationwide curriculum to improve the health and education of adolescent mothers and their children. Hannabeth plans to focus on domestic and international issues surrounding gender-based violence and is part of the population studies program at UNC.
When not engaged in study and research, Hannabeth’s interest include pie baking, hiking, and spending too much money at used bookstores.
