Sakai Support

Contact us for help with Sakai!

The Instructional Technology group supports Sakai and related instructional technologies for the faculty, staff and students in the school. We can help guide you through campus and school-supported technologies, and help determine the “why” and “when” of using technology for instruction. Get in touch with us using our Contact Us info, attend a workshop, or browse through our documentation or FAQs for an answer to your question.

We can advise and assist with Sakai and other tools, including VoiceThread, Blackboard Collaborate, Warpwire, Poll Everywhere, and more.

Announcements:

Need help getting your courses up and running in Sakai? We’re hosting two Sakai Prep Sessions for this Fall:

Tuesday, August 14th: 1pm to 2pm | Mayes Center (Rosenau 230)

Tuesday, August 28th: 11am to 12pm | MHRC 3005

The sessions will both cover:

  • Getting started in Sakai
  • Big changes this semester: Poll Everywhere; Zoom; and testing accommodations
  • Any specific questions you have

RSVP to andrew_ochs@unc.edu if you’d like to attend a session.

Starting August 6th, Zoom is the campus-supported web conferencing software.

For general questions and how this will affect web conferencing in Sakai:

  • See this campus communication:

The University has purchased a campus license with Zoom, a web and video conferencing solution. Zoom will be available to all campus users starting on August 6, 2018.

With a campus-wide adoption of Zoom, we will not renew our license with Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing and will therefore disable both the Blackboard Collaborate and Collaborate Ultra tools in Sakai when Zoom becomes available on August 6.

We have contracted with Blackboard to convert all recordings in Blackboard Collaborate and Collaborate Ultra to MP4 file, and we will store these files for at least a year. We are finalizing details for requesting recordings and will follow up with you as soon as we have more information.

Due to the complexity of the University’s Zoom implementation, we have concluded from our testing that faculty, staff, and students would have a better experience using Zoom directly to schedule meetings. While Zoom will not be integrated with Sakai, we will list Zoom as a site tool with information on creating and sharing meeting rooms. All campus users will be able to easily create and manage their own meeting rooms through Zoom and share their meetings with participants.

Our recommendation is to create an ongoing Zoom meeting room and to add the link to join your meeting room to your Sakai site. You may want to consider adding it to your site in your Overview page, Site Info, in your syllabus, or wherever you think will be easiest for your site members to access it. We are currently working on help documentation on using Zoom with Sakai and will share those when they are available.

Zoom provides the same web conferencing functionality available in Blackboard Collaborate (including breakout rooms) with improved usability, as well as some additional features:

• Display up to 25 video feeds at once
• Simultaneous view of presenter video feed and shared screen (not available in Collaborate Ultra)
• Share host’s computer audio (useful for sharing external video resources in real time)
• Record meetings locally or to the cloud
• Usage reports available to meeting host

We understand that you likely have questions, so please do not hesitate to reach out to us by submitting a help ticket at help.unc.edu. We encourage you to go ahead and take a look at Zoom tutorials. We will follow up as soon as we have more details on accessing Blackboard Collaborate and Collaborate Ultra recordings.
