There are two ways you can manage your course videos. The following table describes the advantages, disadvantages, and action steps associated with each method. You may choose either method or a combination of both.

Built-in Sakai Panopto Folder Personal Panopto Folder
Description:
Use the Panopto Folder built into your Sakai site. Turn on the “Panopto” tool in Site Info -> Manage Tools and access Panopto through the Sakai left-hand navigation. Manage video through the course; a term-specific Panopto folder is created automatically. Access Panopto directly and go to your personal “My Folder” in Panopto. Create a subfolder for your course(s). Use that folder to manage video across semesters. Embed your videos manually in Sakai as needed.
Why To Use (Advantages):
  • Easiest way to quickly share video with students in Sakai

  • If your content is mainly new each semester, start with a blank slate each time
  • Older content stays in previous Sakai site for archive, if needed
  • Other instructors and TAs in Sakai site can automatically access and manage videos
  • Can map Zoom cloud recordings for course into that course folder; Zoom class recordings automatically appear in Sakai
  • Creates a more permanent single place to manage and share video across terms
  • If you re-use video each term, do not have to copy videos into each new Sakai site Panopto folder
  • If you embed your video in Lessons using the shopping cart option, no need to redo anything each semester
  • Have easier control over what students see – only give access to exact videos you choose
Disadvantages:
  • If you re-use video each semester, must copy old videos into new site each semester
  • Older content can be harder to find/re-use
  • If you embed video in Lessons using the shopping cart option, videos stay connected to older course folders
  • Must manually share videos with students in your Sakai site; not immediately available via Panopto button
  • Must manually give other instructors and TAs who to need to manage videos “creator” access to your course folder
What to do each semester:
  • Give any new TAs and/or instructors who need to manage video in your folder “creator” access
  • Optional: map your Zoom cloud recordings for the course to automatically go into the course subfolder (instead of “Meeting Recordings”)
  • Optional: Any videos you will NOT be re-using, consider moving to an archive folder
Consider A Blended Approach:
  • Use the Sakai Panopto folder for term-specific videos, like class recordings, that you will NOT reuse each semester, OR do not individually embed in Lessons
  • Use a permanent course subfolder under your Panopto “My Folder” for any video content you re-use each semester OR typically only embed in Lessons, like pre-recorded lectures
