Four UNC Gillings School researchers are among the world's highly cited

March 2, 2018 Four Gillings School faculty members have been named to Clarivate Analytics’ 2017 Highly Cited Researchers list. They are Dr. Ralph Baric (epidemiology), Dr. Noel Brewer (health behavior), Dr. Hans Paerl (environmental sciences and engineering) and Dr. Barry Popkin (nutrition).

Rimer announces Stürmer as new epidemiology chair

December 14, 2017 Dr. Til Stürmer will become chair of the Gillings School's Department of Epidemiology on March 1, 2018, pending necessary approvals, including from the UNC board of trustees. Dean Barbara K. Rimer expressed confidence in Stürmer's deep commitment to assuring that the department remains one of the top programs in the world, and thanked outgoing chair, Dr. Andy Olshan, for 11 years of excellent service.

Study of first-graders shows fetal alcohol spectrum disorders prevalent in US communities

February 12, 2018 A new study, co-authored by Dr. Philip May, found that between 1 percent and 5 percent of the 6,000 first-graders studied have fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Findings were published Feb. 6 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Popkin to present AHA’s Kritchevsky Lecture

January 31, 2018 Dr. Barry M. Popkin has been invited by the American Heart Association Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Council to present the David Kritchevsky Memorial Lecture in New Orleans on March 22.

UNC study links low carbohydrate intake to increased risk of birth defects

January 25, 2018 Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant may want to avoid diets that reduce or eliminate carbohydrates, as such diets could increase the risk of having babies with neural tube birth defects, according to a study led by Dr. Tania Desrosiers.

Shaikh to receive Mary Swartz Rose Young Investigator Award

January 24, 2018 Dr. Raza Shaikh, associate professor of nutrition, has been selected to receive the 2018 Mary Swartz Rose Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Nutrition. The award recognizes outstanding research into the safety and efficacy of bioactive compounds for human health.

Prescribing fresh, nutritious food will improve health of low-income, high-risk patients

January 19, 2018 Dr. Alice Ammerman is co-principal investigator on a project that will provide fresh fruits and vegetables to high-risk, low-income patients at a local medical center in an effort to improve the patients' health and well-being. Cozzo wins 2017 Marci Kramish Campbell Dissertation Award

January 17, 2018 Alyssa Cozzo, doctoral student in nutrition, has been named recipient of the 2017 Marci Kramish Campbell Dissertation Award. Dr. Campbell, pictured at left, was a leader in UNC cancer research who died of cancer in 2011.

Bulik awarded Distinguished Investigator Grant by Brain and Behavior Research Foundation

January 8, 2018 Dr. Cynthia Bulik is one of 17 scientists awarded a Distinguished Investigator Grant from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. Bulik, professor of nutrition, is founding director of the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. Her proposal is a large-scale investigation designed to identify genes that contribute to bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.
