The Department of Nutrition is proud to celebrate 75 years of advancing the field of nutrition through education and research. To mark the occasion, we invite you to join us for our 75th Anniversary Speakers Series highlighting the many facets of nutrition.

*All in-person events may be moved to a virtual setting depending on the status of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

November 11, 2021: Virtual Cook Along with Dr. Alice Ammerman, Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

Dr. Alice Ammerman, this year’s recipient of our Distinguished Alumni Award, will share details of her “Med-South” diet – a Mediterranean diet adapted to agricultural availability and taste preferences in the Southeastern US. We invite you to join her in your very own kitchen as you cook one of her staple dishes.

February 10, 2022: Lecture with Dr. Mercedes Carnethon

Dr. Mercedes Carnethon, Vice Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University and Mary Harris Thompson Professor of Preventive Medicine, will speak on her work identifying how health behaviors such as diet, physical activity, and sleep affect long-term health in population subgroups defined by race/ethnicity, geography, socioeconomic status, gender identity, and sexual orientation.

March 3, 2022: Lecture with Dr. José Ordovás

Dr. José Ordovás, Director of the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, will discuss his work on the impact of diet on genetic factors and the emerging field of nutrigenomics.

April 7, 2022: Lecture with Dr. Lindsay H. Allen

Dr. Lindsay Allen, Director of the USDA ARS Western Human Nutrition Research Center at UC Davis, presents a talk on her research focusing on the causes, consequences, and prevention of micronutrient deficiencies.

May 3, 2022: Lecture with Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian

Dr. Mozaffarian, Dean of Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, will present a lecture on his efforts to create a food system that is nutritious, equitable, and sustainable and to develop evidence-based policies regarding nutrition in the US and around the world.

May 12, 2022: Dr. Steven Zeisel’s Retirement Celebration

Please join us as we celebrate the distinguished career of Dr. Steven Zeisel and his many contributions to the Department of Nutrition. As Chair of the Department from 1990 to 2005 and founding Director of UNC’s Nutrition Research Institute, Dr. Zeisel has transformed the way UNC approaches the study of nutrition and the advancement of public health. We will commemorate his scientific achievements and academic leadership with a reception in the Armfield Atrium.

September 22, 2022: “Food Politics in the Coronavirus Era: What’s Next?” with Dr. Marion Nestle

Award winning author of Food Politics and NYU Professor Emerita, Dr Marion Nestle will discuss how the food industry responded to the Covid-19 pandemic and what it means for the development of nutritional policy going forward.
