2017 UNC-IntraHealth fellows explored wide range of health topics in summer program

October 15, 2017 Graduates of the eighth annual UNC-IntraHealth Summer Fellows Program spent 10 weeks working with global health professionals at IntraHealth International, taking part in projects that focused on HIV-related stigma, sexual discrimination at work, and other public health topics. Graduates of the program are Saja Al-Falahi, Alex Dest, Yutaka Endo and Kati Jackson.

‘Carolina Grad Student F1RSTS’ initiative helps students succeed in graduate school

Five new Gillings Innovation Labs awarded

October 5, 2017 Five teams of Gillings School researchers and their collaborators have been awarded new funding for Gillings Innovation Laboratory awards (GILs), beginning this fall. The teams are led by Drs. Orlando Coronell, Stephanie Engel, Emily Gower, Stephen Marshall and Kristen Hassmiller-Lynch, and Steven Meshnick. The awards are administered by Research, Innovation and Global Solutions, the Gillings School unit that manages programs funded by the $50 million Gillings gift.

Lancet report charts path toward health for sub-Saharan countries

September 26, 2017 Dr. Irene Agyepong, Gillings School alumna, is lead author of a new, comprehensive report that charts a roadmap for improved health among sub-Saharan Africans. Published in The Lancet, the report was co-authored by a number of public health researchers and policy makers around the world.

Savings less than expected for generic oral chemotherapy, study finds

September 11, 2017 A study by Dr. Stacie Dusetzina, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, determined that the cost savings for a generic version of an orally administered cancer treatment were less than expected -- a finding that questions the impact generic drugs can have on controlling health-care costs.

UNC researchers receive grant to examine enhanced services in NC community pharmacies

September 8, 2017 Kea Turner, a doctoral candidate in the health policy and management department, is co-principal investigator on a grant from the Community Pharmacy Foundation that will analyze barriers to organizational change in community pharmacies.

Gillings Merit Scholars and Gillings Dissertation Awards announced

August 29, 2017 Seventeen students were selected as recipients of Gillings Merit Scholarships or Gillings Dissertation Awards for the 2017-2018 academic year. The award funds, established in 2010 to help the Gillings School recruit and support graduate students with exceptional promise and potential, were made possible through the $50 million Gillings gift and are administered through the Gillings School’s Research, Innovation and Global Solutions office.

New UNC cancer initiative focuses on improving screening rates, reducing deaths

August 24, 2017 UNC researchers have launched the Carolina Cancer Screening Initiative, an ambitious, multi-pronged effort to improve cancer screening rates in North Carolina.

Meier wins ‘Outstanding Alumnus’ award from Columbia

August 22, 2017 Dr. Benjamin Meier, adjunct assistant professor in health policy and management, has received an outstanding alumnus award from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.
