May 13, 2017 Families and friends of 329 new Gillings School alumni gathered on May 13 to celebrate the School's 77th commencement. Aaron Williams, executive vice president for government relations and corporate communications at RTI International, delivered the commencement address.

Two master’s students awarded Winston Health Policy Fellowship

May 12, 2017 Master's students Jessica Broadus and Margot Schein were awarded funding from the David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship. The award recognizes those students who have demonstrated potential to succeed in health policy at the state or federal level.

Study evaluates the CDC’s Tips From Former Smokers campaign, finds it an effective smoking cessation program

May 12, 2017 A new study assesses the impact of Tips From Former Smokers (Tips), the first federally funded tobacco education campaign in the U.S., which has been aired annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 2012. Doctoral student Paul Shafer, also a research economist at RTI International, is co-author of the study, published May 12 in Health Education and Behavior.

HPM authors win ‘Article of the Year’ award

May 1, 2017 Brystana Kaufman, MSPH, health policy and management student, is first author of an article selected as The Journal of Rural Health’s inaugural Article of the Year for 2016. “The Rising Rate of Rural Hospital Closures,” published in the journal’s winter 2016 print issue, was co-authored by researchers at UNC's Sheps Center, including Drs. Mark Holmes and George Pink, of the Gillings School.

Doctoral student co-authors two studies on the difficulties of quitting smoking

April 26, 2017 Paul Shafer, health policy and management doctoral student, co-authored two articles that examine aspects of the behaviors of smokers who are trying to quit or who are exposed to antismoking advertising. The articles appear in Preventing Chronic Disease and the Journal of Health Communication.

Wheeler visits executive mansion to mark NC’s inaugural Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Month

April 12, 2017 Dr. Stephanie Wheeler (second from left) was among those invited to speak at the Governor’s Mansion in Raleigh, N.C., during an April 3 event that focused attention upon metastatic breast cancer as the second-leading cause of cancer death among women. Gov. Roy Cooper declared April Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
