A national sports injury prevention center has added two University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers to its roster of experts.
Steve Marshall, PhD, associate professor of epidemiology in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been appointed director of epidemiology and biostatistics at the Datalys Center for Sports Injury Research and Prevention. Susanne Wolf, a research associate in the public health school, will act as a senior project coordinator for the center. The Datalys Center is a national nonprofit organization which conducts and supports research aimed at preventing sports injuries and improving physical activity-related health and safety. It was formed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Indiana-based life sciences institution BioCrossroads and the American College of Sports Medicine. Launched in April, the center is a spin-off of the NCAA’s injury surveillance program, which over the past 25 years created the world’s largest collegiate sports injury database. Marshall will oversee and manage all surveillance, research, analysis and health policy activities conducted at the organization. His own research at UNC focuses on sports and recreation injuries, including severe knee damage such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. He is also a faculty member in the orthopedics department in the School of Medicine and in the exercise and sport science department in the College of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center. Wolf has 30 years’ experience implementing and running research projects, including surveillance of occupational injuries.
