Monica Schmidt, current MPH distance student in the Public Health Leadership Program (PHLP), has been awarded a $10,000 research grant from the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (NC TraCS).

This grant will fund her project, titled: “Development and Evaluation of a Sensitive and Specific Multiplex Assay for Early Detection of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.”

NC TraCS offers grants to support researchers with the early development of a research idea or to expand an existing study beyond the original scope into promising new directions. The purpose of Monica’s study is to investigate and to validate early biomarkers of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) utilizing a novel protein multiplex platform that can be rapidly translated to the clinical laboratory. The proposed multiplex assay will develop an algorithm that will generate a risk score for HCC.

Monica also recently received the 2010-2011 Association of North Carolina Boards of Health (ANCBH) Vaughn Upshaw Scholarship, presented annually to an outstanding graduate student in the Public Health Leadership Program.
