Dr. Elizabeth Mayer-Davis

Elizabeth J. Mayer-Davis, MSPH, PhD, RD, nutrition professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been named president of health care and education for the American Diabetes Association (ADA). In this role, she will serve as primary spokesperson and advocate for the association regarding clinical management of diabetes care principles.

“I’m honored and delighted to be part of the ADA effort to improve the lives of all people who are at risk for developing diabetes or who are living with the disease,” Mayer-Davis said.

Her research has focused on diabetes in youth, diabetes prevention and management, and diabetes among African-Americans and other minority and underserved populations.

Mayer-Davis has served the ADA through numerous national appointments, including a term on the association’s board of directors. A current member of the cardiometabolic risk initiative subcommittee and the professional practice committee’s nutrition subcommittee, she also is former chair of the professional section interest group on epidemiology and statistics and has participated on the health care reform task force; the scientific sessions planning, publications policy, and professional practice committees; grant review panel; Diabetes Care editorial board; and the Kelly West Award selection committee.

Mayer-Davis earned her doctorate in epidemiology from the University of California at Berkeley. She also holds a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine, and a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics from the University of Tennessee.

Diabetes is a serious disease that affects the body’s ability to produce or respond properly to insulin, a hormone that allows blood glucose to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults may have diabetes by 2050. ADA encourages people to take action through its program, Stop Diabetes®.
