Leatherman contributes to National Academy of Sciences report on health care around the globe

September 12, 2018 Sheila Leatherman, professor of health policy and management, served on a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine study committee whose recent report identified possible pathways for widespread improvement to global quality of health care issues. In low- and middle-income countries, between 5.7 and 8.4 million deaths occur each year from poor quality of care.

UNC Gillings alumna named CEO of EngenderHealth

September 12, 2018 Gillings School alumna Traci L. Baird (MPH, 1995, health behavior) has been named president and CEO of EngenderHealth, a leading global women’s health and sexual and reproductive rights organization. She will step into the role Oct. 1.

Styblo, Fry awarded NIH grant to examine impact of pre- and postnatal exposure to arsenic on diabetes

Aiello awarded NIH grant to study psychosocial exposures, epigenetic impacts on health

September 8, 2018 Dr. Allison Aiello has been awarded a five-year, $3.5 million National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities grant to investigate the influence of psychosocial experiences upon markers of health and disease for people in the U.S. Specifically, she and colleagues will examine the impact of psychosocial exposures upon people’s cardiometabolic and mental health.

Law intended to increase access to behavioral health care had little impact, study finds

September 8, 2018 A 2008 law that required insurance plans to offer mental health and addiction benefits at the same level as physical health benefits did not significantly reduce out-of-pocket spending on outpatient behavioral health services or increase their use, according to new research.

Fry and O’Shea awarded $20.5M NIH grant to study environment and children’s health

September 7, 2019 Dr. Rebecca Fry will continue a collaboration with Dr. Michael O'Shea at the UNC School of Medicine to study environmental impacts upon children's health. The researchers were awarded more than $20 million to continue the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program.

Study demonstrates benefits among people living with HIV who inject drugs

September 5, 2018 Gillings School researchers are part of an international team reporting promising findings related to the prevention of HIV transmission among people who are HIV-positive and use injectable drugs and their partners. The key findings of HPTN 074, part of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), were published Aug. 30 in The Lancet.
