May 15, 2019 "Disrupted: Eviction & Health in Durham, NC" is a website and exhibit that offers a glimpse into how eviction often leads to poor health outcomes. The project, which sheds light on this issue in Durham, North Carolina, is the work of Karla Jimenez-Magdaleno, a dual Master’s degree candidate in public health and city and regional planning.
Rural patients who receive medical care far from home less likely to go to nursing facilities near where they live
April 26, 2019 Many patients who live in rural areas travel to urban hospitals for acute care. A recent study found that many of these patients subsequently obtain post-acute care from skilled nursing facilities that are not near their homes – and the further away the hospital, the less likely patients are to return to their home community for care.
New research shows women potentially can spread Zika virus to sexual partners for up to six months after infection
April 18, 2019 Women who are infected with the Zika virus potentially can spread the virus to sexual partners for up to six months after infection. The CDC currently says women in Zika endemic areas should not try to conceive for two months following infection, but the new findings bring that recommendation into question.

April 2, 2019 Monitoring the psychosocial experiences of people living with HIV is a key recommendation for conducting clinical trials where participants will have interruptions in antiretroviral therapy. This new development is influenced in part by the contributions of Karine Dubé, a social scientist at the Gillings School.

Communities without access to municipal water are at greater risk of having lead in their drinking water

In the study’s test area, 28 percent of households had lead in their kitchen tap water at concentrations above the U.S. EPA's health-based limit of 15 parts per billion, which is similar to the risk in Flint, Mich., during the 2015 water crisis.
