September 7, 2017 The Water Institute at UNC, based in the Gillings School and directed by Dr. Jamie Bartram, has been designated as a Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Collaborating Center for Water and Sanitation.

Gillings Merit Scholars and Gillings Dissertation Awards announced

August 29, 2017 Seventeen students were selected as recipients of Gillings Merit Scholarships or Gillings Dissertation Awards for the 2017-2018 academic year. The award funds, established in 2010 to help the Gillings School recruit and support graduate students with exceptional promise and potential, were made possible through the $50 million Gillings gift and are administered through the Gillings School’s Research, Innovation and Global Solutions office.

Turpin wins ACS award for creative advances in science and technology

August 23, 2017 Dr. Barbara Turpin has been honored with the 2017 American Chemical Society (ACS) Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Sciences and Technology. She will be recognized at the ACS conference in New Orleans next March.

Climate change expected to increase premature deaths from air pollution

July 31, 2017 A new study by Dr. Jason West estimates that future climate change, if left unaddressed, is expected to cause roughly 60,000 deaths globally in the year 2030 and 260,000 deaths in 2100 due to climate change’s effect on global air pollution. NIH renews UNC Gillings environmental health sciences training grant for ninth time

July 19, 2017 The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has renewed a major training grant that the Gillings School has led since 1971. The program supports scholars in biostatistics, epidemiology and environmental sciences and engineering, many of whom have gone on to affect national environmental policy.

Surratt recognized by environmental journal as ‘highly prolific’ author

July 18, 2017 Dr. Jason Surratt was honored by Environmental Science and Technology Letters as an author who has had a high publication rate in the journal over the past five years.

July 13, 2017 A new paper by Dr. Jackie MacDonald Gibson offers recommendations that could improve the health of North Carolinians who rely on private drinking-water wells. The paper summarizes recommendations made by the Research Triangle (N.C.) Environmental Health Collaborative at a two-day well-water summit.
