Dr. Barbara Turpin

Barbara J. Turpin, PhD, professor and chair of environmental sciences and engineering at UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been honored with the 2017 American Chemical Society (ACS) Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Sciences and Technology.

The award is presented to encourage creativity in research and technology or methods of analysis that provide 1) a scientific basis for informed environmental control decision-making processes or 2) practical technologies that will reduce health risk factors. Turpin was recognized for elucidating the role of aqueous chemistry on atmospheric formation of organic particulate matter.

Turpin joined the UNC Gillings School faculty in 2015, after 21 years on the faculty of Rutgers University. Her research focuses upon fundamental processes needed to predict the impact of air pollution on humans. She works to facilitate communication between atmospheric, exposure and health scientists, with the ultimate goal of protecting the public’s health.

She will accept her award at the 25th annual ACS meeting and exposition, to be held in New Orleans March 18-22, 2018.
