Art fundraiser to benefit nursing and public health student, faculty trip to Gulf Coast

An art sale will be held at UNC’s School of Nursing on Feb. 7 to raise funds needed to send UNC students and faculty to help Gulf Coast residents affected by Hurricane Katrina.The sale is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the first floor of Carrington Hall.
Proceeds from the event will go toward covering transportation expenses for volunteers from the schools of nursing and public health, who will travel to the Mississippi towns of Ocean Springs, Biloxi and Long Beach to provide care to those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers will staff medical clinics, community work crews, a distribution center and a food kitchen. Radio station WCHL 1360 honored mission coordinators Cheryll Lesneski, DrPH, and Beth Lamanna with the Village Pride Award on Feb. 7 for planning the medical mission trip. Lesneski is an assistant professor in the School of Public Health and Lamanna is a clinical instructor for the School of Nursing and affiliated with the North Carolina Institute for Public Health. The trip will take place during UNC’s spring break in March. The schools also are seeking volunteers from the university and surrounding community to join the trip. Artists from the juried arts showcase Chatham Studio Tour will be on-site throughout the day. They are donating a portion of their sales to support the UNC trip. About 100 pieces in different media will be available, with prices ranging from $10 to $300. Included are paintings, silkscreen prints, ceramics, scarves and shawls and jewelry.
