The UNC School of Public Health’s Environmental Sciences and Engineering Department has been ranked the nation’s seventh best graduate program for environmental/environmental health by U.S. News & World Report magazine for its 2007 edition of “American’s Best Graduate School.”Environmental/environmental health is a specialty category under Schools of Engineering. New rankings appear in the April 10 issue of U.S. News and World Report magazine, which hit newsstands April 3 along with the “America’s Best Graduate Schools” guidebook. Details are available at www.usnews.com.
“This ranking is a testament to our department’s outstanding work in improving and protecting the quality of the air, water and soil in North Carolina and around the globe,” said Don Fox, Interim Chair of the Department. “It means even more to know our rank is based on the opinions and assessment of our colleagues and peers at other institutions. We were compared to a number of Schools of Engineering. We’re a little different, but we believe our home within the School of Public Health is perfect setting for our teaching, research and practice.” U.S. News first ranked graduate programs in 1987 and has done so annually since 1990. Business, education, engineering, law and medicine are ranked annually. Those rankings are based on expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students, according to magazine officials. Other disciplines and specialties in the sciences, social sciences and humanities are ranked periodically. Those rankings are based on the ratings of academic experts. Schools of Public Health were last ranked in 2003 when Carolina’s School of Public Health tied with Harvard for second best, behind Johns Hopkins.
