September 06, 2005 | |
Four international Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows who were studying at Tulane University in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit have relocated to Carolina’s School of Public Health. These fellows, who are health care leaders in their own countries, join 10 Humphrey Fellows already studying at our School. The Office of Global Health and the N.C. Institute for Public Health assisted in the relocation of these four fellows.UNC welcomes to our School family:
The prestigious Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is a Fullbright Exchange Activity with primary support from the United States Department of State. The program provides an opportunity for professionals at a midpoint in their careers to spend one year in non-degree graduate study and work-related experiences in the United States. Fellows are nominated by U.S. embassies or Fulbright Commissions based on their potential for national leadership and a demonstrated commitment to public services in either the public or private sector. Fellowships are granted competitively to people from regions of Central and South America, Asia and the Middle East. The U.S. Congress initiated the Humphrey Program in 1978 to honor the memory and accomplishments of the late Senator and Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey. Since 1978, more than 3,000 Fellows from more then 140 countries have participated in the program on more than 40 U.S. university campuses.
