The U.S. Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP) has awarded two multi-year grants, totaling $4 million, to two faculty members who will conduct research and data analysis to inform federal policy about rural health.
Mark Holmes, PhD, assistant professor, and George Pink, PhD, Humana Distinguished Professor, both in the Department of Health Policy and Management at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, are also senior research fellows at UNC’s Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Holmes says the grants follow in the 35-year tradition of the Sheps Center’s Program on Rural Health. Recent work by the rural health program has focused on hospital financing, long-term care in rural settings and federal insurance programs. Its research has been used by multiple federal agencies in designing and implementing policy. Study findings recently were presented at meetings of the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services and at a Rural Health Capital Symposium sponsored by the White House Rural Council and the ORHP. ORHP is based in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration.
