Zeisel chosen to deliver prestigious Atwater Lecture

Steven Zeisel, MD, PhD, has been selected to deliver the 2009 W.O. Atwater Lecture by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS). <p”> Zeisel is Kenan Distinguished Professor of nutrition and pediatrics in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and the UNC School of Medicine and director of the UNC Nutrition Research Institute in Kannapolis, N.C. He also directs UNC’s Clinical Nutrition Research Center and Center of Excellence in Children’s Nutrition. <p”> The ARS established the Atwater Lecture in 1968 to honor the memory of Wilbur Olin Atwater (1844-1907) and to recognize scientists who have made unique contributions toward improving the diet and nutrition of people around the world. <p”> Zeisel’s lecture, co-sponsored by the American Society for Nutrition and presented during the meeting of Experimental Biology 2009 in New Orleans, La., on Tuesday, April 21, will address “Individualized Nutrition: How Genes, Epigenetics and Sex Interact to Create a Dietary Requirement for the Nutrient Choline.” Those honored previously with the award include eminent leaders in nutrition research, including Robert P. Heaney (2008), Barbara J. Rolls (2007) and John W. Erdman (2006).
