UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s program, Carolina Well, has received a LIVESTRONG® Community Engagement Award to fund an arts program for cancer survivors. Marci Campbell, PhD, MPH, RD, professor of nutrition in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, is Carolina Well’s director.

LIVESTRONG® was founded by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong to serve people affected by cancer and empower them to take action. The organization’s Community Impact Project distributes awards in three areas: transitional support, education and empowerment to survivors after cancer treatment; artist-in-residence programs that foster creativity in patients during treatment and in palliative care settings; and education and support for the siblings of childhood cancer patients.

One hundred seventy-nine qualified hospitals, cancer centers and community organizations in eight regions across the United States were selected to participate in an online voting campaign. Over a two-week period, more than 260,000 votes were cast, and UNC was among the finalists. UNC will receive a $16,000 award to purchase art supplies and hire an artist to work with patients.

“We are thrilled and honored to be named as a Community Impact Project award recipient,” Campbell said. “This award will go a long way in helping people in our community who are affected by cancer. We want to give special thanks to everyone who voted in support of this program. Together, we’re making a difference in the lives of cancer survivors and their families.”

LIVESTRONG® is committed to supporting community organizations in their efforts to help cancer survivors face the challenges and changes that come with cancer. Since its inception in 1997, the organization has invested more than $68 million in community-centered organizations.

Carolina Well was developed as part of the cancer center’s efforts to improve survivorship services for North Carolinians touched by cancer. UNC Lineberger is one of only eight LIVESTRONG® centers in the country and the only one in the Southeast. More information about Carolina Well is available online.
