Timothy Mastro, MD, FACP, DTM&H, Group Director of Global Health, Population & Nutrition, has been elected as a member of the American Epidemiological Society (AES), a select society that provides a scientific forum for senior epidemiologists.

Epidemiology is the study of disease distribution and the determinants of health and disease risk in human populations.

To advance the field, the AES holds free and vigorous discussions of epidemiological investigations, including a two-day annual meeting that features two distinguished lectures, sponsored debates and a series of scientific presentations. “FHI 360 proudly congratulates Tim on his election to the American Epidemiological Society,” said CEO Al Siemens. “His many contributions played an important role in shaping our current understanding of the infectious disease epidemiology, with extensive impact in the area of HIV/AIDS.”

Dr. Mastro is board certified in internal medicine and trained at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer ― he oversees research and programs in global health, population and nutrition at FHI 360. He is also Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before joining Family Health International (now FHI 360) in 2008, Dr. Mastro was deputy director of the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at CDC in Atlanta. During his 20 years at the CDC, his work addressed HIV, TB and STI prevention research and programs in the United States and in 25 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. He directed CDC’s participation in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and led CDC’s HIV vaccine efforts. During 1993-2000, he served in Bangkok as director of the CDC HIV/AIDS collaboration with the Thai Ministry of Public Health. He is the author of over 150 published articles and book chapters. While at CDC, Dr. Mastro received the Alexander Langmuir Award for Epidemiologic Investigation and the Charles Shepard Science Award twice. During 1983-85, Dr. Mastro served as a physician and medical coordinator of the United Nations Border Relief Operation on the Thai-Cambodian border.

“Dr. Mastro’s election to AES is well deserved”, said FHI 360 President Emeritus Ward Cates. “His extraordinary contributions to the field of HIV epidemiology and prevention, his leadership in epidemiologic thinking and his strong mentorship of colleagues make him an ideal AES member.”
