Teams of entrepreneurial students, faculty and staff from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will compete for $50,000 in prizes at the 2009 Carolina Challenge final competition Saturday (March 28) from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Kenan-Flagler Business School’s Maurice J. Koury Auditorium.

Three doctoral students from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Department of Nutrition are among the finalists. Team members Lucia Leone, May May Leung and Rachel Tabak, will present their nonprofit restaurant business plan, “Everybody Eats.”

The public is invited to attend the challenge finals and the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative (CEI) celebration that follows from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kenan-Flagler’s Café McColl.

At the challenge finals, four finalist teams — two with commercial ventures and two with social — will pitch their ideas. Audience members will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite to win the People’s Choice Award. Grand prize winners will be announced at 7:15 p.m. at the celebration event, which will feature a band and barbecue.

Those planning to attend the celebration are asked to RSVP to rsvpkenan@unc.edu.

The Carolina Challenge is a signature offering of the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative (CEI), a university-wide program that helps UNC students, faculty and staff learn to transform their ideas into new ventures of all kinds.

The $11-million program is funded in part by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, managed by the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise and led by faculty and staff across the university from an array of disciplines. Successful entrepreneurs, many of them Carolina alumni, serve as advisers, lending their real-world expertise.
