Dorothy Cilenti, DrPH, deputy director of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s N.C. Institute for Public Health, has been appointed chair of the North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation’s board of directors. Cilenti, who is also clinical assistant professor of maternal and child health at the UNC public health school, has served on the Foundation’s board since 2007.
“I admire Dorothy’s vision and commitment to our mission of improving the health of women and young children across North Carolina,” said Janice Freedman, MPH, the Foundation’s executive director.
“She has been a tremendous asset since joining the board, and I am delighted she is taking on this new leadership role.”
North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The nonprofit agency was established in 1990 with a five-year, $5 million grant from Glaxo Inc. to address North Carolina’s high infant mortality rate. With the Foundation’s efforts, the state’s infant mortality rate has decreased 35 percent, and there has been a significant decrease in the rate of babies dying of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
