NCIPH hosts leadership retreat

UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s N.C. Institute for Public Health hosted a retreat this month for the National Public Health Leadership Institute (NPHLI). Fifty high-level public health scholars from 26 states attended the three-day conference at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., which launched the year-long leadership program.

Agenda topics addressed leading teams, leading in crisis and leading change. Session leaders included UNC Gillings Visiting Professor and former N.C. State Health Director Leah Devlin, DDS, MPH; William Ferris, PhD, the Joel R. Williamson Eminent Professor of History and senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South; Gene Matthews, JD, director of the legal preparedness initiative at N.C. Institute for Public Health; and William Roper, MD, MPH, dean of the School of Medicine, vice chancellor for medical affairs and chief executive officer of the UNC Health Care System at UNC-Chapel Hill. NPHLI is a collaboration of the California Center for Health Leadership and Practice, the Center for Creative Leadership Greensboro, and the N.C. Institute for Public Health. It aims to bolster the leadership direction of public health nationally with improved skills, change strategies and stronger networks.
The next retreat will be in California in September 2010. Distance-learning activities such as webinars will continue between sessions.
