Camille McGirt, senior health policy and management major at Gillings School of Global Public Health, received the 2013 University Award for the Advancement of Women. She accepted the award at a reception on March 22. Presented on behalf of the offices of the chancellor and the executive vice chancellor and provost and by the Carolina Women’s Center, the award recognizes contributions to the advancement of women at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Each year, one staff member, one student and one faculty member are acknowledged for taking steps on campus to empower and improve the status of women.
McGirt received a framed certificate and $2,500.
“I felt a jolt of joy when the chancellor’s office notified me about this award,” McGirt said. “I am incredibly grateful to UNC for all of the resources and support I’ve received.”
McGirt established Healthy Girls Save the World, a program that promotes healthy lifestyles for 8- to 15-year-old girls in the Chapel Hill (N.C.) area. The program provides information about exercise and nutrition and integrates lessons on self-esteem, good study habits, and the importance of respectful and positive relationships.
“I’ve been fortunate to have had people in my life who taught me the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle,” McGirt said. “I feel it is my moral duty to teach other girls those same principles to ensure their future success as confident, healthy and intelligent women.”
