HPM student selected for Holzworth Scholarship

Gift Kamanga
Gift Kamanga, MSc, health policy and management (HPM) student at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has received the School’s 2011 Donald and Jennifer Holzworth Merit Scholarship. The award is given to a UNC public health student in recognition of his or her potential to help find and implement public health solutions. Kamanga, a distance learner in HPM’s Doctor of Public Health in Health Leadership program, lives in Lilongwe, Malawi. He works as manager for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Clinical Services and Research at the UNC Project/Kamuzu Central Hospital STI Clinic. Malawi has an HIV prevalence rate of 12 percent. Kamanga hopes his interest in HIV prevention services will mitigate the impact of HIV. He says he would like to see effective coordination and leadership that would bring about primary and secondary HIV prevention. “Gift is so deserving of the Donald and Jennifer Holzworth Merit Scholarship this year,” said Suzanne Hobbs, DrPH, clinical associate professor of health policy and management and nutrition. “His work in Malawi in the area of AIDS research is making a tremendous contribution to improving health around the world.” The Holzworth Scholarship is made possible by a generous contribution from Donald and Jennifer Holzworth, longtime supporters of the UNC public health school. Don Holzworth, chairman of Futures Group International, is executive in residence at the School and chairs the School’s advisory council. He and his wife also established another public health scholarship honoring both their fathers. # # #
