The North Carolina Institute for Public Health has named Steve A. Hicks director for workforce development. Hicks, a 15-year veteran of executive education, will be responsible for training programs among the state’s public health workforce. These programs are part of the Institute’s mission as the service and outreach arm of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health. In announcing the appointment of Hicks, Institute director Ed Baker said, “Not only is Steve an ideal candidate based on his experience designing instructional programs, but he understands and appreciates the partnerships we have around the state to provide quality education for public health professionals.” One of Hick’s main assignments will be to assume the directorship of the Office of Continuing Education (OCE) upon the retirement of current director Bill Browder, who has held the post since 1991. OCE offers about 150 courses each year in locations across the state. Other Institute programs include year-long management and leadership institutes and online workshops targeting preparedness skills among health workers and their organizations. Hicks received his EdD from North Carolina State University, his MEd from UNC, and his BA from Duke University. Previously, he has held positions at the Institute for Defense and Business, the UNC School of Medicine, Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC, and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke.
