Presha Patel, Gregory Mascavage and Jessica Folmar, second-year Master of Public Health students in The Department of Health Policy and Management, have won second place in the 14th annual Everett V. Fox Student Case Competition, held during the National Association of Health Services Executives’ annual educational conference on Oct. 14-16 in Orlando, Fla. The competition offers first- and second-year graduate students an educational experience to enhance their problem analysis and presentation skills. Students are charged with applying their creativity, knowledge and experience to analyze real and diverse issues facing a health care organization. This year’s conference theme was “Is America Ready for Real Health Care Reform? – The Rewards and Risks for Real Change.” Patel, Mascavage and Folmar prepared a proposal for UnitedHealth Group, describing how to improve health care in essential ways, specifically addressing the patient-centered medical home concept and patient incentives. “Our department views case competitions as pertinent to the graduate school education process, and therefore we support and send a team each year to the NAHSE event,” said Peggy Leatt, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management and associate dean for academic affairs at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. “This particular case was a challenging one,” Leatt said, “because it looked beyond the traditional hospital model case and allowed our students to utilize the competencies they obtain in our program to analyze a case that included purchasers, providers, policy makers and patients. We are very pleased with our team winning second place out of nineteen teams from around the country.” Each of the students was awarded a $3,000 scholarship.
