The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Management celebrated its 75th anniversary in September. As many as 175 people from across the United States attended the two-day celebration in Chapel Hill, N.C. Deborah Parham Hopson, PhD, a 1990 alumna of the department, gave the first of three keynote presentations, describing her work as associate administrator for HIV/AIDS at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration.
Alumni Mark Merrill (MSPH, ’84), president and chief executive officer of Valley Health Systems in Winchester, Va., and Pam Silberman (DrPH, ’97), president and chief executive officer of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, spoke also – on health leadership and policy, respectively.
“This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the department’s achievements, to see old friends and meet new ones,” said Peggy Leatt, PhD, professor and chair of the department. “It is amazing to track the number of transitions the department has made to keep up to date with the needs of the field. We have undergone several name changes and have grown dramatically. We have more educational programs, more students, more faculty and staff members, more alumni, and, of course, more health services research. We are especially delighted that our alumni are so eager to be involved in our educational programs and research.” A collection of videos, presentations and photographs from the event can be seen at www.sph.unc.edu/hpm/75.
