The School of Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Administration has been named a demonstration site by the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) as part of a project to enhance the education of future health leaders. The project, called the Graduate Health Management Education Demonstration Project, was initiated two years ago and was developed to better identify the core competencies that need to be taught to future health leaders in graduate healthcare management programs.

“This is a really important project, and we’re delighted to have been chosen as a demonstration site,” said Peggy Leatt, PhD, chair of the department. “Competency-based learning and outcomes assessment is a growing area of interest for us. Being a part of this project will allow us to be on the cutting edge of development.”

The Health Policy and Administration department was chosen for the project based on the strength of institutional support for participation, its current educational programming and measurement initiatives, and the quality of students and faculty. As part of the project, the department is expected to develop and implement a program-wide competency-based learning assessment curriculum using the model developed by the NCHL.

The National Center for Healthcare Leadership is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to assure that high-quality, evidence-based, health management leadership is available.
