Dr. Sandra Greene

Sandra B. Greene, DrPH, Professor of the Practice in health policy and management at Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been reappointed by former N.C. governor Bev Perdue for a two-year term on the North Carolina State Health Coordinating Council in Raleigh.

Greene was first appointed to the council by Gov. James B. Hunt in 1996.

The 29-member group produces an annual State Medical Facilities Plan (SMFP) for health-care facilities and services in the state, including hospitals, skilled nursing homes and ambulatory surgery centers, as well as services that include open-heart surgery, operating rooms, PET scanners and hospice programs.

The SMFP specifies how many new services and facilities are needed in the state and where they should be located. Such planning is important so that only needed facilities and services are added to an already costly health-care system. A priority of health planning is to assure that services are distributed geographically so that all North Carolinians have reasonable access to care.

Greene said that as a biostatistician, she has a twofold and longstanding interest in North Carolina’s health planning process – to develop better data use in planning and to improve the methodologies used to project when new services are needed.

“The results of our work have an impact on where and how our residents receive health care, so it is important that we get it right,” she said.
