The Nutrition Coalition, a student organization aimed at promoting health and nutrition on the UNC campus, is always on the lookout for fun and engaging ways to bring the student body together. To fulfill this mission, over the past few years, the Nutrition Coalition has sponsored dozens of Supper Clubs. These monthly pot-luck events encourage students to break away from the books for an afternoon and feast on some good home cookin’. This October, Eldon Peters, a first year master’s student in the Department of Nutrition, graciously offered to host the seasonally-themed festivities. The turn out was great, with thirty people in attendance, and not all Nutrition students as you might expect! Students from the departments of Maternal and Child Health, Epidemiology, and Environmental Sciences and Engineering arrived with homemade goodies in hand, eager for the chance to mingle. Much to the department’s dismay, Eldon was forced to admit, “the Nutrition people were the first ones to leave- before the dance party even started!” In addition to turning on the music, Eldon hoped to add a bit of spice to the party by bestowing awards to the best chefs. The competition was ruthless, but in the end, the best drink went to a pumpkin vodka concoction and best overall dish to pumpkin chili! Eldon remarked that “fun was had by all….I can’t wait until next month!” The Nutrition Coalition sponsors a variety of other activities throughout the year from cooking demonstrations at local senior centers to volunteering events at community gardens.
