Three students from ESE, Angella Rinehold (MSEE, Singer Advisor), Josh Hunn (MSPH, Characklis Advisor) and Joe Brown (PhD, Sobsey Advisor) along with ESE Alum Reed Palmer (MS ’06, Characklis Advisor), and PhD Student, Jamie Perin from Biostatistics recently returned from Cambodia, where they worked on a rainwater harvesting system for a primary school outside Phnom Penh. The group are members of Engineers Without Borders-USA at UNC, who have been working with a local Non-governmental Organization (NGO) and the community of Dey Ut to provide an alternative drinking water source for the school. The existing source of water was an arsenic-contaminated well that served 1200 students. Volunteers worked with the local people on system construction, technical improvements to rainwater harvesting systems, and on project sustainability through community involvement.
