Lauren Brown

Lauren Brown, a junior bachelor of science in public health student in UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Department of Nutrition, has received one of 23 Phillips Ambassadorships for study abroad in Asia.

Phillips Ambassadors are selected based on their academic achievements and commitment to activities, service and leadership in the classroom and community. Administered through the UNC College of Arts and Sciences and Kenan-Flagler Business School, the scholarship program is made possible through a generous gift from UNC alumnus Earl N. Phillips Jr., an entrepreneur and former United States ambassador.

Brown, a pre-med student from Mocksville, N.C., is minoring in chemistry and entrepreneurship. She will study this summer in Beijing, China, as part of the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative program.

In addition to serving as an intern and taking courses in Chinese culture and the Mandarin language, Brown hopes to visit the Chinese Center for Disease Control’s nutrition department and learn about the public health and medical fields in the country.

“I’ve learned a lot in my health policy and management class about the similarities and differences in the U.S. and Chinese health care systems,” she says. “That has sparked my interest in the Chinese system. I want to see how entrepreneurs are trying to solve some of the most pressing medical and public health issues in China.”

She also is interested in how policies and the changing family dynamic have affected the Chinese diet.

“Children are starting to dictate what families are eating,” Brown says, “and I want to see how companies take advantage of this new dynamic with advertising, packaging, etc. I want to see if the Chinese government has attempted to counter the emerging obesity epidemic with a campaign to promote healthy eating.”

Brown says she feels privileged to be a Phillips Ambassador and is thrilled to meet “other students who are as excited about Asia as I am.”
