Dr. Marva Price

Alumna Marva Mizell Price, DrPH, associate professor in Duke University’s School of Nursing, has been appointed by North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue to the Mining and Energy Commission. Price will serve a four-year term ending in June 2016.

The new commission, legislated by the N.C. General Assembly, will develop and oversee regulations regarding hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to access underground deposits of oil and gas. The 12-person group will determine how companies conducting the drilling may best balance the needs of the gas and oil industry and its customers while protecting health, property and the environment.

Price, a member of the North Carolina Public Health Commission, is past director of the Chatham County (N.C.) Health Department. She received a Master of Public Health degree in maternal and child health from UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health in 1974 and a Doctor of Public Health in Public Health Leadership, also through the maternal and child health department, in 1977.
