The School of Public Health’s Minority Health Project will present the 12th Annual Summer Public Health Research Institute and Videoconference on Minority Health on Monday, June 26, and Wednesday, June 28, from 2 to 4:00 p.m. each day. This forum for experts in the area of health disparities will feature two panel discussions, each available for public viewing by satellite broadcast and webcast.The public is invited to attend the June 26 session in person, which will be broadcast from the Cobb Theatre in the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and Health. The June 28 session will be broadcast from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md., but a Chapel Hill location to view the satellite feed will be chosen soon. The Minority Health Project will also present the entire program by webcast at www.minority.unc.edu/institute/.

The June 26 session will feature a panel discussion about race-specific medicine. Stephanie L. Crayton, Media Relations Manager in UNC Health Care’s Office of Public Affairs and Marketing, will moderate.

The three panelists will be:

  • Joseph L. Graves, PhD, Professor of Biology and Dean of University Studies at North Carolina A&T State University
  • Pilar Ossorio, PhD, JD, Associate Professor of Law and Medical Ethics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School
  • Morris W. Foster, MPhil, PhD, Associate Professor and currently Acting Chair of the University of Oklahoma’s Anthropology Department.

Wednesday’s session, moderated by Allan S. Noonan, MD, MPH, Dean of Morgan State University’s School of Public Health and Policy, will focus on tobacco use prevention and cessation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The panelists will be:

  • Adrienne Y. Witherspoon, Tobacco Project Coordinator at the North Carolina A&T State University School of Nursing
  • Michelle Cotton Laws, Project Evaluator for the On the Ground Smoking Cessation & Prevention Project at North Carolina Central University
  • Sharon Fryar Height, Project Director at the On the Ground Smoking Cessation & Prevention Project at Bennett College for Women
  • Helen Lettlow, DrPH, Assistant Vice President, American Legacy Foundation.
