HPM authors win ‘Article of the Year’ award
May 1, 2017 Brystana Kaufman, MSPH, health policy and management student, is first author of an article selected as The Journal of Rural Health’s inaugural Article of the Year for 2016. “The Rising Rate of Rural Hospital Closures,” published in the journal’s winter 2016 print issue, was co-authored by researchers at UNC's Sheps Center, including Drs. Mark Holmes and George Pink, of the Gillings School.
Student-led program to fight childhood obesity wins $50K grant

Cancer burden will shift for people with HIV in US, study finds
April 6, 2017 Epidemiology doctoral student Jessica Islam worked with researchers at the NCI and CDC to find that the total number of HIV-positive cancer patients in the U.S. is projected to decrease through 2030. Islam and colleagues attribute the lowered cancer risk to widespread treatment with antiretroviral therapies.
