November 7, 2017 Studies have shown that women have greater difficulty in quitting smoking than do men, and a new study of mice by researchers at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health explores why that may be the case. Led by Dr. Kun Lu, the study finds that nicotine has a different impact upon the relationship of the brain and gut in women.

Health policy and management team takes first place in NAHSE case competition
October 31, 2017 Three health policy and management students took first prize at the 22nd annual Everett V. Fox Student Case Competition, held Oct. 17-20 in San Antonio. Each came home with a $4,000 scholarship.

Study examines characteristics of deaths from drug overdose in North Carolina
October 17, 2017 According to study findings by maternal and child health doctoral student Anna Austin, death by drug overdose is an important and continuing public health concern in the U.S. The average self-inflicted drug overdose victim was 50 years old, female and white. In contrast, the average unintentional drug overdose victim was a 43-year-old male. Austin's findings were published Oct. 10 in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
2017 UNC-IntraHealth fellows explored wide range of health topics in summer program
October 15, 2017 Graduates of the eighth annual UNC-IntraHealth Summer Fellows Program spent 10 weeks working with global health professionals at IntraHealth International, taking part in projects that focused on HIV-related stigma, sexual discrimination at work, and other public health topics. Graduates of the program are Saja Al-Falahi, Alex Dest, Yutaka Endo and Kati Jackson.
