Veterans’ care for PTSD not hindered by co-occurring substance use disorders

March 20, 2017 A study led by Dr. Alyssa Mansfield (Damon) found that veterans with more than one substance use disorder were not hindered from receiving outpatient specialty post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment or sufficient psychotherapy. Findings were published online March 1 in the journal Psychiatric Services.

Ribisl receives American Society of Preventive Oncology award for efforts to reduce tobacco use

March 16, 2017 Dr. Kurt Ribisl was honored on March 13 with the American Society of Preventive Oncology's 2017 Joseph W. Cullen Memorial Award for policy research aimed at limiting use of tobacco products, especially by young people.

Sorenson, former chair of health behavior, dead at 74

March 15, 2017 Dr. James Sorenson, who chaired the Gillings School's Department of Health Behavior from 1985 to 1996, died in Pittsboro, N.C., on March 13. He was 74.

ESE student wins toxicology award

March 15, 2017 ESE doctoral student Abhishek Venkatratnam has won the Perry J. Gehring Best Graduate Student Abstract Award for 2017. The award is presented by the Society of Toxicology’s (SOT) Risk Assessment Specialty Section.

UNC Gillings School Study: 'No Fat,' 'No Sugar' no guarantee of nutritional quality

March 15, 2017 Terms such as “no fat” or “no sugar” on food packaging may give consumers a sense of confidence before they purchase, but these claims rarely reflect the actual nutritional quality of the food. These are the findings of a new study led by Dr. Lindsey Taillie and published online March 15 in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Biostatistics student finalist for scholarship

March 8, 2017 Ting Wang, biostatistics doctoral student, is one of three finalists for the 2017 Thomas C. Chalmers Student Scholarship for the abstract of his paper, “Auxiliary-variable-enriched Biomarker Stratified Design.” The scholarship is awarded by the Society for Clinical Trials.

Cilenti named interim health director for Orange County

March 2, 2017 Dr. Dorothy Cilenti has been named interim director of the Orange County health department, effective March 1. A clinical associate professor of maternal and child health at the Gillings School, Cilenti also directs the National Maternal Child Health Workforce Development Center.
