New scholarship honors community health pioneer John Hatch
February 23, 2024 Piedmont Health Services, Inc. has established a new scholarship at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health in honor of community health pioneer Dr. John Hatch '75. The scholarship was unveiled at the School's Engage alumni event on February 22 at the Gillings School.

Professorship supports Fry's work toward healthier N.C.
March 16, 2023 Rebecca Fry’s lab is one of the first to study the effects of prenatal exposure to toxic metals as it relates to the epigenome — she has shown how behaviors and the environment can cause changes that affect the way genes function. She launched the Institute for Environmental Health Solutions and is using funds from the Angle Professorship and the UNC Superfund Research Program, which she directs, to work with North Carolina communities that have contaminated drinking water and provide them with cost-effective filters.

In memory of Dr. Craig Turnbull
December 20, 2022 Prolific researcher and dedicated mentor Dr. Craig Turnbull has passed away. He had a profound personal and professional impact on the Gillings School of Global Public Health, especially undergraduate students for whom he advocated and worked tirelessly – ensuring they had a home at the School.
Humanitarian Health Initiative supports frontline response to improve maternal and child health in Sierra Leone
October 17, 2022 The Humanitarian Health Initiative worked with Sierra Leone nongovernmental organization Rural Health Care Initiative to increase the impact of its response to the country’s maternal mortality crisis.
Staley wins Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship
August 4, 2022 Brooke Staley, a doctoral candidate in epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and former co-chair of the Minority Student Caucus, was selected as one of 38 awardees in the 2022 Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship competition.
