March 2, 2018 Four Gillings School faculty members have been named to Clarivate Analytics’ 2017 Highly Cited Researchers list. They are Dr. Ralph Baric (epidemiology), Dr. Noel Brewer (health behavior), Dr. Hans Paerl (environmental sciences and engineering) and Dr. Barry Popkin (nutrition).

Gray elected to National Academy of Engineering

February 22, 2018 Dr. William Gray, research professor of environmental sciences and engineering, is one of 99 new members of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering. Election to the Academy is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.

UNC Gillings School, RTI International to test for lead in drinking water at 300 Wake County households with young children

February 19, 2018 Private wells used for household drinking water are not routinely monitored for lead, which may put young children at risk for lead poisoning. The Gillings School and RTI International are partnering to offer free water and child blood lead tests for up to 300 Wake County, N.C., households using private wells for drinking water.

Groundbreaking study creates global estimates of environmental safety challenges in health-care facilities

February 16, 2018 A new study has produced, for the first time, estimates of the environmental conditions in health-care facilities in low- and middle-income countries around the world.

New research on global surface ozone levels highlights regions, populations most affected by air pollution

February 7, 2018 Dr. Joseph Pinto is a co-author of an international Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report that presents analyses of ozone levels around the world. The research was led by the universities of Leicester and Edinburg and 12 other institutions.

Characklis and team awarded $2.5M NSF grant to study flood, drought conditions in Oregon

February 2, 2018 Dr. Gregory Characklis is part of a team awarded a $2.5 million National Science Foundation grant to study the variability of flood and drought conditions in Oregon and the effects of those conditions on food, water and energy production in the region.

Stillo honored for research with Journal of Public Health Management and Practice award

January 18, 2018 Frank Stillo, doctoral student in environmental sciences and engineering, was selected by the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice as a student who 'rocked public health' in 2017.

Gillings School undergraduates who will change the world

January 15, 2018 Dr. Rebecca Fry, environmental sciences and engineering professor and director of the UNC Superfund Research Program, has been named Carol Remmer Angle Distinguished Professor of Children’s Environmental Health.
